Section 252: Conviction on plea of guilty

Section 252 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 provides the procedure for a conviction of a person who is charged and admits to the accusations against him.
The judge should formally record the plea when an accused person enters a plea of guilty. Documentation of the plea is essential since it is the official record of the admission of guilt by the accused. The record becomes the basis for subsequent legal actions and ensures that the plea is properly acknowledged in the judicial process.
After the recording of the guilty plea, the discretion to convict the accused is in the hands of the judge solely on the admission of guilt. In such cases, the judge may decide to dispense with further evidence or trial proceedings if the guilty plea is voluntary and the accused is fully aware of the legal consequences of their plea. This provision allows for the court's conclusion in speedy fashion where it is apparent from the words that the accused are guilty.
