• It calls on Member States to promote awareness of sickle cell disease both nationally and internationally on June 19 each year.

• Sickle cell disease comprises a group of inherited blood disorders that affect red blood cells, making them stiff and sickle-shaped.

Thailand became the first South Asian country to recognize same-sex marriage.

LAW AND AMENDMENTS

New postal law 'Post Office Act 2023' came into force.

• The Post Office Act 2023 has come into force following a Central Government notification effective from June 18.

• This new law replaces the Indian Post Office Act of 1898.

• The "Post Office Bill, 2023" was introduced in Rajya Sabha on August 10, 2023, and passed on December 4, 2023.

• It was subsequently passed in Lok Sabha on December 18, 2023.

• The President of India gave his assent to the Act on December 24, 2023, and it was published by the Ministry of Law & Justice in the Gazette of India.

• The Act aims to simplify the legislative framework for citizen-centric services, ensuring government scheme benefits reach the last mile and enhancing ease of living.

• The special facility for storage, processing, and distribution of letters previously available to the post office has been discontinued.

• To promote "maximum governance and minimum government," the Act includes no penal provisions.

• The new postal law sets standards for item addressing, address identifiers, and the use of postcodes.
