STATE NEWS

Railways is planning to build canopy bridges across the track in Hollangapar Gibbon Sanctuary.

• The Indian Railways has announced plans to construct canopy bridges across the railway tracks in the Hollangapar Gibbon Sanctuary to facilitate the movement of apes.

• The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) will build these canopy bridges to aid apes in safely crossing the tracks that divide the sanctuary.

• The Wildlife Institute of India, in partnership with the NFR, will design the canopy bridges to blend seamlessly with the natural environment.

• The railway track, which is 1.65 kilometers long, is set for doubling and electrification. This track bisects the 2,098.62-hectare Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary located in the Jorhat district of Assam.

• The Hollangapar Gibbon Sanctuary hosts the largest population of hoolock gibbons, which predominantly live in the upper canopy of tall trees.

• The fragmentation caused by the railway track has disrupted the natural habitat of the gibbons, prompting the need for these canopy bridges to restore connectivity and ensure their safety.
