Union Home Ministry renames Port Blair as Sri Vijaya Puram

• Union Minister Amit Shah announced the renaming of the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Union Territory from Port Blair to Sri Vijaya Puram on social media.

• The newly renamed city, Sri Vijaya Puram, is situated on South Andaman Island, which is part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

• In India, city, town, or railway station names are altered only after receiving approval from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

• The Ministry of Home Affairs seeks input from the Geographical Survey of India, the Department of Post, and the Ministry of Earth Sciences before granting approval for name changes.

• This decision is part of India’s ongoing effort to remove colonial influences from place names across the country.

STATE NEWS

In terms of states having AYUSH facilities, Madhya Pradesh leads the nation

• Madhya Pradesh ranks among the top three states for the number of sub-divisional hospitals.

• In terms of district hospitals, Madhya Pradesh holds the second position with 52 facilities, while Uttar Pradesh leads with 125.

• The state is a leader in AYUSH facilities, ranking first for having the most AYUSH doctors in tribal areas with 228 doctors across primary and community health centres.

• Odisha is the top state for AYUSH doctors overall with 296, followed by Chhattisgarh with 279.

• Since 2005, Madhya Pradesh has significantly expanded its number of sub-health centres in rural areas, being one of the six pioneering states in this effort.

• Madhya Pradesh ranks seventh among the top 10 states with the highest number of primary health centres.

• With 332 community health centres out of a national total of 5,491, Madhya Pradesh is in the top six states for these facilities.

• According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's report, Madhya Pradesh leads the nation in the availability of AYUSH facilities.
