APPOINTMENTS
Justice N. Kotiswar Singh and Justice R. Mahadevan Sworn in as Supreme Court Judges
• Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh and Justice R. Mahadevan were sworn in as Supreme Court judges on July 18, 2024.
• The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud, in a ceremony held at the Supreme Court in New Delhi.
• With their appointment, the total number of Supreme Court judges, including the Chief Justice, is now 34.
• The Supreme Court Collegium, led by the Chief Justice of India, recommended their appointments to the Government of India on July 11, 2024.
• President Droupadi Murmu appointed them as Supreme Court judges on July 16, 2024, exercising her authority under Article 124(2) of the Constitution.
• The President appoints Supreme Court judges in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, other Supreme Court judges, and High Court judges.
• The appointments follow a formal process of recommendation by the Collegium and approval by the President.
• The inclusion of Justice Singh and Justice Mahadevan brings additional expertise to the Supreme Court.

• India and Switzerland aim to achieve $100 billion in investment and create 1 million jobs within the next 15 years.
• Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, was on a two-day visit to Switzerland.
• During his visit, Goyal encouraged Swiss companies to invest in India's growing and dynamic market.
• The main objective of the visit was to discuss the implementation of the historic India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), signed on March 10.
• Switzerland is India’s 20th largest trading partner globally, with bilateral trade amounting to USD 21 billion in 2023.
• Switzerland is also the 12th largest investor in India, having invested SD 10 billion from April 2000 to March 2024 under FDI.
• Approximately 330 Swiss companies operate in India, creating over 166,000 jobs in the country.

Government Launches India's First Toll-Free National Anti-Narcotics Helpline
• The government has introduced India's first toll-free national anti-narcotics helpline number, 1933, known as 'MANAS' (Madak Padarth Nisedh Asuchna Kendra or Narcotics Prohibition Intelligence Centre).
• Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the helpline during the seventh apex-level meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD).
• The helpline will enable individuals to report illegal narcotics activities and related issues to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
• MANAS aims to provide a user-friendly platform for citizens to report drug-related matters 24/7.
• Amit Shah also inaugurated the NCB zonal office in Srinagar virtually.
• He released the NCB's 2023 annual report and a compendium on "Nasha Mukt Bharat" (Drug-Free India).
• The launch of this helpline underscores the government's commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking.
