Justice Sanjiv Khanna Retires as 51st Chief Justice of India; Justice Bhushan Gavai to Succeed
• Justice Sanjiv Khanna retired as the 51st Chief Justice of India on May 13, ending his six-month tenure that began on November 10, 2024.
• His retirement marked the conclusion of his term as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
• Justice Khanna recommended Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, the second most senior Supreme Court judge, as his successor.
• The recommendation was sent to the Union Law and Justice Ministry and approved by President Murmu.
• Justice Gavai, elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, will become the 52nd Chief Justice of India.
• At age 64, Justice Gavai will serve until November 23, 2025, the mandatory retirement age of 65 for Supreme Court judges.
• By convention, the most senior Supreme Court judge is appointed as Chief Justice by the President of India.
• H. J. Kania was the first Chief Justice of India, serving from 1950 to 1951, establishing the tradition of the post.
Justice Surya Kant Named Executive Chairman of NALSA, Effective May 14, 2025
• Justice Surya Kant of the Supreme Court has been appointed as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
• The appointment was made by President Droupadi Murmu under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
• Justice Kant will assume the role from Justice BR Gavai, who becomes the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025.
• His tenure as NALSA’s executive chairman starts on May 14 and will last until November 23, 2025.
• Justice Kant previously served as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court and judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
• He is expected to be elevated as the 53rd Chief Justice of India after his NALSA tenure.
• NALSA’s mission is to provide free legal aid to marginalized and weaker sections of society.
• The Chief Justice of India acts as Patron-in-Chief of NALSA, and appointments to chairperson positions are made by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice.
