Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Enforced: Women's Reservation Law Comes Into Force (2026)

• The Union Government has officially enforced the 106th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2023, known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.

• The Law Ministry notified 16 April 2026 as the commencement date, completing an important procedural requirement.

• The Act provides 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.

• It introduces Article 330A and Article 332A, ensuring women's reservation including representation for SC/ST women.

• The reservation seats will be implemented through a rotation system, changing constituencies after each delimitation.

• Notification was necessary because without bringing the Act into force, the government could not legally proceed with further amendments for implementation.

• Initially, implementation was linked to a delimitation exercise after a fresh Census, which could have delayed reservation for several years.

• To speed up the process, the government introduced the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2026, proposing delimitation using 2011 Census data, with the aim of enabling women's reservation by the 2029 general elections.

Rajya Sabha Reconstitutes Panel of Vice-Chairpersons (April 2026)

• The Rajya Sabha has reconstituted its panel of Vice-Chairpersons, appointing six MPs from different political parties.

• The announcement was made on 16 April 2026 by Secretary General P. C. Mody, and the panel became effective from 15 April 2026.

• The newly nominated members include Dinesh Sharma, S. Phangnon Konyak, and Ghanshyam Tiwari (BJP).

• Phulo Devi Netam (Congress), M. Thambidurai (AIADMK), and Sasmit Patra (BJD) are also part of the panel.

• The panel is formed to ensure that House proceedings continue smoothly when needed.

• These Vice-Chairpersons preside over the House in the absence of both the Chairman (Vice-President of India) and the Deputy Chairman.

• While presiding, they perform key duties like maintaining order, managing debates, and enforcing parliamentary rules.

• Unlike the Deputy Chairman (a constitutional post), this panel is not permanent and functions on a rotational and nomination-based system for uninterrupted legislative work.

India Approves SEZ for First Semiconductor Fab Plant at Dholera, Gujarat

• The Government of India has approved an SEZ for India's first semiconductor fabrication plant, boosting domestic chip manufacturing.

• The SEZ has been granted to Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Pvt. Ltd, for a major project in Dholera, Gujarat.

• Tata plans an investment of nearly ₹91,000 crore, making it one of India's largest high-tech manufacturing projects.

• The fabrication facility will cover 66.16 hectares and is expected to generate around 21,000 employment opportunities.

• The SEZ notification was issued by the Department of Commerce, showing the government's push for advanced industrial infrastructure.

• The approval follows SEZ rule reforms (June 2025), which reduced the minimum land requirement for semiconductor SEZs from 50 hectares to 10 hectares.

• Along with Tata's project, four more semiconductor SEZ proposals have also been cleared to strengthen the full supply chain.

• Key additional projects include Micron (₹13,000 crore) and firms like Kaynes Semicon and CG Semi, focusing on assembly, testing, and packaging, supporting India's goal of reducing chip import dependence.

RANKING AND INDEX

IMF 2025 GDP Ranking: India Slips to 6th Position Due to Rupee Depreciation

• As per the IMF estimates (2025), India has fallen to 6th place in global nominal GDP rankings.

• India's nominal GDP is estimated at around $3.92 trillion, slightly below the United Kingdom ($4 trillion).

• Germany ($4.7 trillion) ranks third, while Japan ($4.44 trillion) stands at fourth position globally.

• The United States ($30.8 trillion) remains the largest economy, followed by China ($19.6 trillion).

• India had been ranked 5th in 2024, but the latest shift has pushed it behind the UK.

• The main reason for the decline is rupee depreciation against the US dollar, affecting GDP calculation in dollar terms.

• Since global rankings are based on nominal GDP in USD, exchange rate weakness reduces India's comparative size.

• Despite this drop, IMF projections suggest India may regain 4th rank by 2027 and could become the 3rd largest economy by 2031.
