World Bee Day 2026 and Global Bee Decline

• World Bee Day is observed annually on 20 May to highlight the importance of bees and other pollinators in agriculture and ecosystems.

• Bees help pollinate nearly 90% of wild flowering plants and about 75% of global food crops.

• Major causes of bee decline include habitat loss, pesticide exposure, climate change, and diseases.

• Other emerging threats include microplastics in beehives, light pollution, pesticide mixtures, and warzone-related disruptions.

• Commercial beekeepers in the United States reported an average 62% colony loss between June 2024 and March 2025.

• The die-off was described as the largest honeybee loss in recorded US history, with bees contributing around $15 billion annually to US agriculture.

• Thiamethoxam, a neonicotinoid pesticide restricted in the European Union since 2018, remained a policy concern after emergency approvals in the UK.

• Conservation measures promoted globally include reduced pesticide use, crop rotation, and restoration of pollinator habitats through pollinator-friendly farming practices.

APPOINTMENTS

N.S.K. Umesh Appointed OSD to Kerala Chief Minister

• N.S.K. Umesh, a 2015-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, was appointed as Additional Secretary and Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Chief Minister of Kerala on 20 May 2026.

• The appointment order was issued by the Department of General Administration under the directives of the Governor.

• The order was signed by Additional Secretary Rajesh G.R..

• An Officer on Special Duty (OSD) is a special administrative assignment attached to senior government offices or ministers in India.

• At the time of appointment, N.S.K. Umesh was serving as Director of General Education, Kerala.

• He was also holding additional charge as Managing Director of the Kerala Financial Corporation.

• Earlier, he served as the District Collector of Ernakulam district in Kerala.

• The Indian Administrative Service is one of the three All India Services created under Article 312 of the Constitution of India.

Manindra Agrawal Elected Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS)

• Manindra Agrawal, Director of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) on 20 May 2026.

• The Royal Society is one of the world’s oldest scientific academies, founded in 1660.

• Fellowship of the Royal Society is denoted by the post-nominal title FRS and recognises major contributions to science and mathematics.

• Agrawal is internationally known for the AKS primality test developed in 2002 with Neeraj Kayal and Nitin Saxena.

• The AKS algorithm is the first unconditional deterministic polynomial-time algorithm for primality testing.

• Manindra Agrawal was born on 20 May 1966 in Allahabad and completed both his B.Tech and PhD from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

• He became Director of IIT Kanpur in April 2024 and has also served as a fellow of major Indian science academies and a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences.

• His major honours include the Gödel Prize (2006), Fulkerson Prize (2006), Infosys Prize for Mathematics (2008), and Padma Shri (2013).

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s India Visit (23–26 May 2026)

• Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit India from 23 to 26 May 2026 on his first India trip as US Secretary of State.

• The visit will include meetings in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi.

• Rubio will attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on 26 May 2026.

• Other participants include Penny Wong, Motegi Toshimitsu, and S. Jaishankar.

• The Quad is a strategic grouping of Australia, India, Japan, and United States focused on Indo-Pacific cooperation.

• Key discussion areas include energy security, defence cooperation, trade, Indo-Pacific stability, and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

• Rubio is also expected to hold bilateral talks with Ajit Doval and S. Jaishankar, with a possible meeting with Narendra Modi.

• The Quad had launched the Critical Minerals Initiative in July 2025 covering minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements used in batteries, electronics, and defence systems.

UN Revises India’s GDP Growth Forecast for 2026

• The United Nations revised India’s GDP growth forecast for 2026 to 6.4% on 20 May 2026, down from the earlier estimate of 6.6%.

• The revision was issued by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.

• ESCAP projected India’s GDP growth at 7.4% for 2025 and 6.6% for 2027 in its Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2026.

• United Nations Conference on Trade and Development separately projected India’s growth at 6.5% in 2026.

• The downgrade was linked to global uncertainties, the West Asia crisis, higher energy import costs, and tighter global financial conditions.

• UN economist Ingo Pitterle cited these factors while explaining the revised outlook.

• India’s exports to the United States reportedly fell by 25% after the imposition of 50% US tariffs in August 2025, while a 1% US remittance tax became effective in January 2026.

• Despite the downgrade, India remained among the fastest-growing major economies, supported by domestic consumption, rural demand, GST cuts, infrastructure investment, and growth in services and manufacturing.

PM Narendra Modi Receives FAO Agricola Medal

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the FAO Agricola Medal on 20 May 2026 in Rome.

• The medal was presented at the FAO Headquarters by Qu Dongyu in the FAO Plenary Hall.

• The Agricola Medal is among the highest honours of the Food and Agriculture Organization.

• The award recognises contributions in agricultural transformation, food security, sustainable agriculture, and rural development.

• The FAO highlighted India’s financial inclusion initiatives for farmers and direct income support to over 110 million farmers.

• It also referred to India’s food-based social safety net covering nearly 800 million people.

• India’s promotion of millets through the International Year of Millets 2023 was also acknowledged.

• During the Rome visit, Modi held talks with Giorgia Meloni and met Sergio Mattarella; the visit was the first by an Indian Head of Government to FAO Headquarters in 30 years.

Indian-Origin Scientists Receive South Africa’s Order of Mapungubwe

• Salim Abdool Karim and Keertan Dheda received South Africa’s highest civilian honour, the Order of Mapungubwe, on 20 May 2026 in Pretoria.

• The awards were conferred by Cyril Ramaphosa during a formal national ceremony.

• The Order of Mapungubwe recognises exceptional achievement and contributions benefiting South Africa and the global community.

• Professor Salim Abdool Karim received the Order of Mapungubwe in Gold for contributions to medical science and public health.

• His research mainly focuses on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis epidemiology, and COVID-19 public health leadership.

• He serves as Director of Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa and is associated with University of KwaZulu-Natal.

• Professor Keertan Dheda received the Order of Mapungubwe in Silver for work in pulmonology and tuberculosis research.

• Mapungubwe was an ancient southern African kingdom and is linked with a Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site.

India’s Archery Coaching Setup for Asian Games & LA Olympics 2028

• India’s archery preparation for the Asian Games and Los Angeles Olympics 2028 includes both foreign and Indian coaches for compound and recurve events.

• Dave Cousins, former World No. 1 from the USA, has been appointed as the head foreign coach of India’s compound archery team.

• Dave Cousins will train archers at the Sports Authority of India centre in Sonepat, with his contract extending till LA Olympics 2028.

• Kisik Lee is associated with India’s recurve archery programme for the Los Angeles Olympic cycle.

• South Korean coach Baek Woong Ki had earlier resigned after denial of accreditation for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

• Italian coach Sergio Pagni rejoined as head coach of India’s compound team on 8 January 2026.

• Indian recurve archers Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das appointed former Commonwealth Games champion Rahul Banerjee as their personal coach in December 2024.

• Recurve archery is currently the only archery discipline in the Olympics, while compound and recurve are both included in the Asian Games.

STATE NEWS

Bihar Approves Direct Gaya–Bangkok International Flights

• The Bihar cabinet approved a proposal for direct international flights between Gaya and Bangkok on 20 May 2026.

• The decision was cleared by the cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.

• InterGlobe Aviation Limited, which operates IndiGo Airlines, was selected as the sole bidder for the route.

• IndiGo will operate the bi-weekly Gaya–Bangkok service under the approved arrangement.

• Gaya Airport will handle the international operations, making Gaya the only town in Bihar with a regular direct international flight.

• The Bihar government approved ₹10.40 crore as Viability Gap Funding (VGF) for one year, equal to ₹5 lakh per round trip.

• The route is linked to Buddhist tourism, especially travel to Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

• The air link is expected to improve tourism, hospitality, transport, and pilgrimage connectivity between India and Thailand before the next tourist season.

DEFENCE

PRAGATI 2026 Multinational Military Exercise

• PRAGATI 2026, a multinational military exercise, began on 20 May 2026 at Umroi Military Station.

• The two-week exercise is being hosted by India in Meghalaya near Shillong.

• Armed forces personnel from 13 countries are participating in the exercise.

• The 12 partner nations are Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.

• The exercise focuses on joint counter-terrorism operations in jungle and semi-mountainous terrain.

• PRAGATI 2026 aims to improve interoperability, coordination, and professional cooperation among participating militaries.

• The exercise also features an exhibition of indigenous defence equipment and innovations linked to the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme.
