Supreme Court Direction on Cauvery Water Release
• The Supreme Court directed Karnataka to comply with the directions of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) regarding the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
• The bench comprised Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, with the next hearing scheduled for 24 August 2026.
• The CWMA was established under the Cauvery Water Management Scheme, 2018 to monitor water availability, reservoir storage and water releases in the Cauvery basin.
• The current direction required Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily from 12 August to 27 August 2026.
• Biligundlu, located between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, is an important interstate measuring point for monitoring Cauvery water flows.
• The Supreme Court noted that water released from Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) reservoir reached Biligundlu and crossed the required 12,000-cusecs level by 8:00 a.m. on 17 August 2026.
• Tamil Nadu claimed that it had received 14.814 TMC against an entitlement of 64 TMC, while Karnataka stated that it had already exceeded the earlier requirement of 3,500 cusecs per day.
• The Court sought a fresh status report from the CWMA before the next hearing; the Cauvery dispute involves Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry and is governed by the 2007 Tribunal Award as modified by the Supreme Court in 2018.
