Supreme Court on Retrospective Environmental Clearance (2026)

• The Supreme Court struck down the 2021 Office Memorandum (OM) that allowed retrospective (post facto) Environmental Clearance (EC) through an administrative mechanism.

• The Court held that post facto Environmental Clearance may be granted only in exceptional cases through a notification under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, subject to the tests of public interest, proportionality, and reasonableness.

• Environmental Clearance (EC) is the prior approval required before specified projects begin construction or operations to assess and mitigate environmental impacts.

• Post facto Environmental Clearance refers to approval granted after a project has commenced without obtaining prior EC.

• The Court ruled that an Office Memorandum cannot create a permanent mechanism for retrospective environmental clearances, and blanket amnesty schemes are impermissible.

• Environmental Clearance in India is governed by the EIA Notification, 2006, issued under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Projects are classified as Category A (appraised by MoEFCC/EAC) and Category B (appraised by SEIAA/SEAC).

• The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) and State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) examine projects before recommending Environmental Clearance.

• The judgment reinforces the environmental law principles of the Precautionary Principle, Sustainable Development, Polluter Pays Principle, and Inter-generational Equity, while reaffirming that prior Environmental Clearance is the rule and post facto approval is a rare exception.

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2026

• World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed every year on 30 July to raise awareness about human trafficking and protect the rights of victims.

• The theme for 2026 is “Trapped Behind the Scam.”

• The campaign highlights forced criminality, where victims are deceived through fake overseas job offers and compelled to operate online scam networks.

• It draws attention to the growing links between human trafficking, cybercrime, online financial fraud, money laundering, and corruption.

• The observance calls for stronger international cooperation to identify, prevent, and dismantle cross-border trafficking networks.

• It also promotes the use of the UN Convention against Cybercrime to combat trafficking facilitated through digital platforms.

• Governments, international organisations, and civil society conduct awareness campaigns, victim support initiatives, and law enforcement cooperation to address human trafficking.

• The day reaffirms the global commitment to prevent trafficking, prosecute offenders, and protect and rehabilitate victims.

Samudra Pradakshina Expedition Honoured

• Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh felicitated nine women officers in New Delhi on 30 July 2026 for completing Samudra Pradakshina, India’s first Tri-service all-women circumnavigation sailing expedition.

• The expedition was conducted aboard the Indian Army Sailing Vessel (IASV) Triveni, covering 25,500 nautical miles across four oceans in 314 days.

• The voyage began with a virtual flag-off from the Gateway of India, Mumbai, on 11 September 2025 and concluded with a virtual flag-in on 22 July 2026.

• The crew crossed the Equator twice, the International Date Line, and rounded the Three Great Capes—Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn, and the Cape of Good Hope.

• The expedition also navigated the Drake Passage, earning the crew membership in the prestigious Cape Horners fraternity.

• IASV Triveni is a 50-foot indigenously built sailing vessel of the Indian Army, with port calls at Fremantle (Australia), Lyttelton (New Zealand), Buenos Aires (Argentina), and Cape Town (South Africa).

• The expedition involved nine women officers from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force, showcasing Tri-service jointness and women’s leadership.

• The mission highlighted India’s maritime capability, military diplomacy, and the spirit of Nari Shakti through a historic global sailing expedition.

Ladakh Declares 23 Protected Monuments

• On 30 July 2026, the Ladakh Administration declared 23 heritage sites across the Union Territory as Protected Monuments under the Jammu and Kashmir Ancient Monuments Preservation Act.

• The notified sites include petroglyphs, rock carvings, ancient caves, monasteries (gompas), forts, palaces, and rock inscriptions of archaeological and historical importance.

• Notable protected sites include the Petroglyph Site at Sharnos, Maitreya Buddha Rock Carving at Shey, Tingmosgang Fort, Ancient Caves at Saspol, Stongday Gonpa, Sumoor Fort, and rock inscriptions at Yourbaltak (Kargil).

• The declaration provides legal protection against encroachment, unauthorised construction, and alteration, while enabling scientific conservation, documentation, and restoration.

• Petroglyphs are rock engravings created by prehistoric or early historic communities, and gompas are Buddhist monasteries commonly found in the Himalayan region.

• The Jammu and Kashmir Ancient Monuments Preservation Act provides the legal framework for the preservation, maintenance, and regulation of protected heritage sites.

• Ladakh became a Union Territory on 31 October 2019 after the reorganisation of the former State of Jammu and Kashmir.

• The initiative aims to preserve Ladakh's rich archaeological, cultural, and Buddhist heritage for future generations.

India Exports Value-Added Flavoured Makhana to Canada

• On 29 July 2026, India exported 7 metric tonnes of value-added flavoured Makhana from Darbhanga, Bihar to Canada.

• The shipment was transported through Mundra Port, Gujarat, in two containers and was processed and packaged by Nutrivin Agro Private Limited for ZKV Foods, Canada.

• Makhana (Fox Nuts) is obtained from the seeds of the aquatic plant Euryale ferox, and Bihar is the largest producer of Makhana in India, particularly in the Mithila region.

• The consignment consisted of value-added flavoured Makhana, involving cleaning, roasting, seasoning, packaging, and food safety compliance for export.

• The export was supported by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

• APEDA promotes the export of agricultural and processed food products from India.

• Value-added agricultural exports generate higher returns than raw produce and enhance India's presence in global food markets.

• The shipment strengthens India's position in the global healthy snack market, with Canada emerging as an important destination for Indian processed food exports.

RANKING AND REPORTS

India Improves in Global Market Distortions Ranking

• India improved from 82nd to 57th place in the Market Distortions Performance Index, according to the report India’s Next Growth Frontier: Reducing Anti-Competitive Market Distortions to Build on India’s 2010–2023 Reform Progress, released on 30 July 2026.

• The index evaluates countries on three pillars: protection of property rights, domestic competition, and international competition.

• India’s improved ranking was attributed to structural and pro-competition reforms undertaken between 2010 and 2023.

• Major reforms highlighted include the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016, regulatory reforms, and trade facilitation measures.

• The report was prepared with contributions from the Competere Foundation and the Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL) under the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT).

• The Competition Act, 2002 governs anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominant position, and combinations in India.

• The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is the statutory authority responsible for enforcing the Competition Act, 2002.

• The report highlights that competitive markets and regulatory reforms are essential for sustaining India's long-term economic growth and investment climate.

11th All India Police Judo Cluster Championship 2026

• The 11th All India Police Judo Cluster Championship 2026 concluded on 30 July 2026 at the GMC Balayogi Indoor Stadium, Gachibowli, Hyderabad (Telangana).

• The championship was held from 23–30 July 2026 and was hosted by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) under the All-India Police Sports Control Board.

• Around 1,600 athletes and officials from 36 Central and State Police organisations participated in the event.

• The championship featured five combat sports: Judo, Wushu, Taekwondo, Karate, and Pencak Silat.

• Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) emerged as the overall champion with 203 points (24 Gold, 20 Silver, 23 Bronze).

• Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) finished second with 198 points, while the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) secured third with 139 points.

• The All-India Police Sports Control Board is the apex body that organises national-level sports competitions for Central and State Police forces.

• Shri C. V. Anand, IPS, Director General of Police, Telangana, attended the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest.

22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships 2026

• India won both the men's and women's team titles at the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships on 30 July 2026 at Thyagaraj Stadium, New Delhi.

• The 22nd edition of the championships is being held from 27 July to 2 August 2026.

• In the men's final, India defeated Malaysia 3–2, with Manush Shah winning two singles matches, including the decisive match against Javen Choong.

• In the women's final, India beat Malaysia 3–0, with victories by Swastika Ghosh, Sreeja Akula, and Yashaswini Ghorpade.

• The Indian women's team remained unbeaten throughout the team competition.

• Malaysia finished as the runner-up in both the men's and women's team events, while England secured bronze medals in both categories.

• India received a USD 10,000 prize purse for winning the team titles.

• Table tennis is not part of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 programme, and the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships are being conducted as a separate biennial event.
