Sikkim Becomes India's First Fully Paperless Judiciary

• The conclave was organised jointly by the High Court of Sikkim and the Sikkim Judicial Academy.

• The digital transformation is expected to reduce case pendency and improve efficiency, transparency, and speed in justice delivery.
• Indian courts are increasingly using Artificial Intelligence-based tools such as SUPACE and SUVAS for legal research, translation, and case management.

World Press Freedom Day 2026 Observed on May 3
• World Press Freedom Day was observed on May 3, 2026, emphasising the importance of free and independent journalism.
• The 2026 theme, "Shaping a Future of Peace," highlighted the role of media in strengthening democracy amid technological and global challenges.
• The main international conference for the event was organised in Lusaka with participation from journalists, policymakers, and civil society groups.
• Discussions focused on issues such as artificial intelligence in journalism, digital safety, misinformation, and economic sustainability of media organisations.
• According to the Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index 2026, India ranked 157th out of 180 countries.

ADB Unveils $70 Billion Connectivity and Digital Infrastructure Plan
• The Asian Development Bank announced a $70 billion investment plan to strengthen electricity and digital connectivity across Asia-Pacific by 2035.
• The announcement was made by Masato Kanda during the bank's 59th annual meeting held in Samarkand.
• The programme includes a $50 billion Pan-Asia Power Grid Initiative and a $20 billion Asia-Pacific Digital Highway project.
• The power grid initiative aims to integrate nearly 20 gigawatts of renewable energy and construct around 22,000 circuit-kilometres of transmission lines by 2035.
• The project is expected to improve electricity access for nearly 200 million people and reduce regional power sector emissions significantly.
• The Asia-Pacific Digital Highway seeks to provide broadband connectivity to 200 million first-time users and improve internet services for another 450 million people.

• NITI Aayog, established in 2015, replaced the Planning Commission to promote cooperative and evidence-based policymaking.

Rohit Jain Appointed as RBI Deputy Governor
• The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of Rohit Jain as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a three-year term.
