Supreme Court: Dowry Givers Cannot Be Prosecuted If They Are the Victims

• The Supreme Court held that a bride or her family cannot be prosecuted for giving dowry if they are the aggrieved party in a dowry-related dispute.

• The ruling came while dismissing a husband's plea seeking criminal action against his wife and in-laws for admitting dowry was given.

• The Bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice K. Vinod Chandran clarified that the Act criminalises both giving and taking dowry in general.

• However, the Court highlighted that Section 7(3) of the Dowry Prohibition Act provides a specific legal protection to victims.

• It stated that victims should not face prosecution merely because they disclose dowry payment while filing complaints of cruelty, harassment, or domestic violence.

• The Court recognised that dowry is often paid due to social pressure, coercion, and fear, not out of free consent.

• The judgment noted that this safeguard reflects Parliament's intent, shaped by recommendations of a joint parliamentary committee.

• The ruling strengthens a victim-friendly interpretation of anti-dowry law and ensures genuine complainants are not discouraged from seeking justice.

Supreme Court on West Bengal SIR: Voting Allowed Only After Appeal Is Accepted

• The Supreme Court ruled that voters excluded during West Bengal's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) can vote if their appeal is accepted by the appellate tribunal.

• Once an appeal is allowed, authorities must immediately ensure the voter's name is added back into the electoral roll.

• The Court directed the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) to update the list without delay, including through supplementary electoral rolls.

• This decision provides direct relief to voters who successfully prove their eligibility through the legal appeal process.

• However, the Court clearly refused to grant voting rights to persons whose appeals are still pending.

• It stated that allowing such voters to vote would create an "anomalous situation" and may affect the credibility of elections.

• The Court noted that more than 34 lakh appeals are pending before 19 appellate tribunals, calling the process a major administrative challenge.

• Authorities were instructed to provide proper support to tribunals, including giving access to the reasons for deletions, to ensure faster and transparent disposal of cases.

Philippines Joins US-Led "Pax Silica" to Strengthen Semiconductor Supply Chains

• The Philippines has joined the US-led Pax Silica initiative, aimed at securing global semiconductor and technology supply networks.

• The step reflects growing geopolitical competition and the rising demand for AI, advanced chips, and high-end electronics.

• Under this plan, the US and Philippines will jointly develop a 4,000-acre industrial hub in Luzon.

• The proposed hub will fall under the Luzon Economic Corridor, a major manufacturing and logistics region that includes Manila.

• The industrial zone will focus on sectors like semiconductors, electronics manufacturing, and critical minerals processing.

• Pax Silica is designed to secure the entire tech supply chain, from raw material extraction to advanced production and digital infrastructure.

• The initiative has expanded quickly, with members including India, South Korea, Singapore, Qatar, and the UAE, and the Philippines becoming the 13th member.

• It supports the US strategy of "friend-shoring", reducing reliance on China and strengthening mineral-to-chip supply chains using resources like nickel, cobalt, and copper.

ECONOMY NEWS

WEF Report: Global GDP Expected to Rise by USD 56 Trillion in Next 5 Years

• The World Economic Forum (WEF) has projected that global GDP may increase by nearly USD 56 trillion over the next five years.

• This growth is expected to be driven by rapid progress in AI, quantum computing, and other frontier technologies.

• The report describes the coming period as a phase of major global transition shaped by economic, geopolitical, social, and technological shifts.

• Artificial intelligence and digital innovation are expected to boost productivity and create new business models across industries.

• Sectors like IT services, advanced manufacturing, and energy systems are likely to benefit the most from this technology-led expansion.

• Growth is also expected in areas like agriculture, education, healthcare, tourism, and transport through modernisation and innovation.

• However, the WEF warns that the impact will be uneven, with some industries like real estate, electronics, insurance/pensions, and chemicals less likely to drive future growth.

• Emerging economies may face challenges due to automation, AI-led production, and geo-economic fragmentation, which can weaken traditional low-cost labour and export-based growth models.

• The Intelligence Bureau has already collected inputs for the agenda, with likely discussions on intelligence sharing, joint operations, and faster communication systems.
