Mohsen Rezaee Appointed Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council
• Mohsen Rezaee, former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was appointed Secretary and Head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council on 9 August 2026.
• The appointment was made by President Masoud Pezeshkian, following the resignation of Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr.
• The Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) is Iran’s key body for national security and defence policy, coordinating matters related to foreign policy, intelligence and defence.
• The Council functions under the formal chairmanship of the President of Iran and derives its constitutional basis from Iran’s Constitution.
• Rezaee served as IRGC commander from 1981 to 1997 and has also served as a senior military adviser and member of the Expediency Discernment Council.
• Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr had served as SNSC Secretary since 24 March 2026, succeeding Ali Larijani.
• The IRGC was established in 1979 following the Iranian Revolution.
• Key Fact: The Expediency Discernment Council helps resolve legislative disputes between Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) and the Guardian Council.
• The appointment also came amid regional diplomatic discussions concerning shipping arrangements through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important oil-transit route.
Rahul Navin Gets One-Year Extension as ED Director
• Enforcement Directorate (ED) Director Rahul Navin received a one-year extension approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on 8 August 2026.
• He will continue as ED Director until 13 August 2027, or until further orders.
• The ED functions under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance and investigates financial offences under:
• Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA)
• Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA)
• Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018 (FEOA)
• Rahul Navin is a 1993-batch Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) officer. He joined the ED as Special Director in November 2019.
• He became Acting ED Director on 15 September 2023 after the tenure of Sanjay Kumar Mishra ended.
• The ED Director has an initial fixed tenure of two years, with provisions allowing up to three one-year extensions.
• Key Facts: The ACC approves senior appointments in the Union Government, while the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) handles central government personnel and service matters.
• His latest extension continues his tenure beyond his scheduled superannuation on 31 July 2027.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
Exercise Talisman Sabre 2027
• Exercise Talisman Sabre 2027 is scheduled from 9 to 22 August 2027.
• It is a major multinational military exercise led by Australia and the United States, aimed at improving joint operations, interoperability and combined planning.
• India’s enhanced participation was welcomed during the India-Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue held on 1 June 2026, co-chaired by Rajnath Singh and Richard Marles.
• The 2027 edition is planned as the largest and most ambitious edition of the exercise, with participation from 24 additional partner nations beyond the traditional Australia-US framework.
• Around 800 personnel are involved in the combined joint planning workforce.
• The exercise focuses on joint training, field-operation coordination and integration of multinational military capabilities across the Indo-Pacific.
• Key Facts: Talisman Sabre traditionally involves Australia and the United States; interoperability means the ability of different armed forces to operate together effectively; and the Indo-Pacific encompasses the Indian Ocean and western and central Pacific regions.
Operation Mukta Launched by Bengaluru Police Against Suspected Illegal Immigrants
• Operation Mukta was launched by the Bengaluru City Police on 8 August 2026 to identify and track suspected illegal immigrants across the city.
• The operation primarily focused on suspected Bangladeshi nationals and involved early-morning raids from around 5:00 AM at multiple locations.
• More than 500 police personnel were deployed in the Whitefield division, with searches conducted across 30+ locations under six police-station limits.
• Police teams checked identity documents, including Aadhaar cards and Voter ID cards, in areas such as Whitefield, Kadugodi, Marathahalli, Bellandur, Varthur, Mahadevapura and Electronic City.
• Around 40 suspicious persons were detained in the Whitefield division for document and background verification.
• Four detained persons were identified as Bangladeshi nationals allegedly staying illegally after foreign documents were recovered during the searches.
• The police planned to coordinate with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for legal deportation proceedings where unauthorised stay was established.
• Deportation and immigration-related action against foreign nationals in India is governed by the Foreigners Act, 1946 and related immigration procedures.

National Security Guidelines for Renewable Energy Projects Near Borders
• The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued national security guidelines on 8 August 2026 for solar, wind and hybrid renewable-energy projects near India’s borders.
• New renewable-energy projects are completely prohibited within 1 km of the International Border (IB), Line of Control (LoC) and Line of Actual Control (LAC).
• Areas within 50 km of these borders have been classified as sensitive zones, requiring security clearance from the MHA.
• Projects located within 20 km of the International Border additionally require a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Defence.
• Developers cannot employ engineers, staff or labourers from Pakistan, China or Bangladesh without prior permission from the Central Government.
• Transfer of project land to a foreign company is prohibited without prior clearance from the MHA and Central Government.
• Developers must bear the cost of mandatory security measures, including anti-drone systems, in notified border zones.
• Existing projects that had already obtained clearance from the MHA or Ministry of Defence before the guidelines were issued do not need to reapply.
India’s Efforts to Join Sixth-Generation Fighter Programme
• India has begun efforts in 2026 to join the French-led Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a proposed sixth-generation fighter aircraft programme involving France and Germany.
• FCAS is expected to feature advanced technologies such as stealth, sensor fusion, artificial intelligence, networked operations and unmanned teaming.
• The Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) is another major sixth-generation fighter initiative involving the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan.
• India’s indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is a fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter being developed under the ADA and DRDO framework.
• The Indian Air Force is exploring foreign collaboration for access to advanced sixth-generation technologies while continuing the modernisation of its Su-30MKI fleet.
• The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence tabled its 25th Action Taken Report on 7 August 2026 and sought a clear roadmap for India’s sixth-generation aircraft initiative.
• France has submitted a proposal for 114 Rafale fighter jets to India, with the estimated value of the proposed deal at around ₹3.25 lakh crore.
• India has not selected the Russian Su-57 option and is focusing on Su-30MKI upgrades, AMCA development and potential sixth-generation fighter partnerships.

Puducherry Police Receives President’s Colour
• The Puducherry Police received the President’s Colour (Nishaan) on 9 August 2026 at the Puducherry Armed Police Ground, Gorimedu.
• The President’s Colour is the highest honour conferred on a disciplined force in India for distinguished service and institutional excellence.
• With this honour, Puducherry Police became the 18th State/UT police force to receive the President’s Colour.
• Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the honour to the Ensign Officer of Puducherry Police.
• President’s approval for conferment of the honour was given on 8 May 2026.
• Puducherry Police operates across the Union Territory’s four regions — Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam.
• The ceremony was attended by Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Home Minister A. Namassivayam, and DGP Shalini Singh.
• Key Facts: President’s Colour is also known as Nishaan; it is a ceremonial distinction associated with distinguished service, discipline and institutional traditions.
• More than 1,000 CRPF and local police personnel were deployed for security during the ceremony.

India Wins 17 Medals on Opening Day of U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship
• The U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2026 began in Lagos, Nigeria, on 9 August 2026 and will continue until 14 August 2026.
• India won 17 medals on the opening day — 4 gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze across foil, epee and sabre.
• Men’s Events: Nikhil Wagh won gold in Men’s Sabre; Tejas Patil won silver in Men’s Foil; and Lokesh Vemani secured silver in Men’s Epee.
• Women’s Events: Joys Ashita won gold in Women’s Foil, Prachi Lohan won gold in Women’s Epee, and Jeferlin won gold in Women’s Sabre.
• Other Indian medallists included Lakshay Badser, Kanaglakshmi, Aakhari, Hemash Sanasam, Shaurya Ashwini, Nivedhya Nair, Anupriya, Shreya Gupta and others.
• The championship features the three Olympic fencing weapons — Foil, Epee and Sabre.

Ashmita Chaliha Wins Korea Masters 2026
• Indian badminton player Ashmita Chaliha won the women’s singles title at the Korea Masters on 9 August 2026 in Asan, South Korea.
• She became the first Indian to win the Korea Masters and secured her maiden BWF World Tour Super 300 title.
• In the final, Chaliha defeated China’s fourth seed Han Qian Xi in 53 minutes, winning 14–21, 21–14, 21–14.
• She had lost the opening game but made a strong comeback to win the next two games.
• In the semi-final, Chaliha defeated fellow Indian Rakshitha Ramraj 21–13, 16–21, 21–13.
• The final was played at the Yi Sun-sin Gymnasium in Asan.
• Chaliha is a left-handed player from Guwahati, Assam, and trains at the National Centre of Excellence, Guwahati.

Bodhana Sivanandan and Shreyas Royal Win British Chess Titles 2026
• Bodhana Sivanandan and Shreyas Royal, Indian-origin chess players, won major titles at the 2026 British Chess Championships on 9 August 2026.
• The 122nd edition was held at the University of Warwick, Coventry, England, and attracted more than 2,600 entries across various sections.
• Bodhana Sivanandan, aged 11, became the youngest-ever British Women’s Chess Champion after defeating Trisha Kanyamarala in a rapid playoff following tied scores.
• Sivanandan suffered only one defeat, against Shreyas Royal in Round 6.
• Shreyas Royal, aged 17, won his first overall British Chess Championship, finishing half a point ahead of English Grandmasters Luke McShane and Michael Adams.
• Royal became the youngest-ever winner of the overall British title.
• Michael Adams is a nine-time British champion.
• Key Facts: The British Chess Championships have a 122-year history; rapid playoffs are used to decide tied positions; and Women Grandmaster (WGM) is a FIDE title in women’s chess.

BRICS Competition Authorities Meeting 2026
• The Competition Commission of India (CCI) hosted the Meeting of Heads of BRICS Competition Authorities on 8 August 2026 in Udaipur, Rajasthan, under India’s 2026 BRICS Chairship.
• Heads and senior representatives of BRICS competition regulators participated in discussions on antitrust enforcement, market regulation and competition policy.
• The meeting adopted a Joint Statement titled “Strengthening Cooperation to Promote Fair Competition, including in Renewable Energy Markets.”
• A collaborative study, “Emerging Competition Landscape in the Renewable Energy Sector in BRICS,” was also presented to examine market dynamics and identify areas for cooperation.
• Competition authorities discussed digital markets and emerging technologies, including platform competition, data-driven business models and cross-border regulatory challenges.
• CCI Chairperson Ravneet Kaur delivered the inaugural address.
• Key Facts: CCI is India’s statutory competition regulator under the Competition Act, 2002. Competition authorities address anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominant position and combinations/mergers.
• BRICS originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa and has subsequently expanded to include additional members.

Deepak Dhar Receives 2026 Dirac Medal
• Indian physicist Deepak Dhar was named a recipient of the 2026 Dirac Medal on 8 August 2026 by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy.
• He shared the award with Bernard Derrida, Marc Mézard, and Haim Sompolinsky for contributions to statistical mechanics.
• The Dirac Medal was established in 1985 by ICTP and is awarded annually on 8 August, the birth anniversary of physicist Paul Dirac.
• The medal carries a US$5,000 prize and is not awarded to previous Nobel, Fields Medal, or Wolf Prize winners.
• Deepak Dhar graduated from the University of Allahabad (1970), completed his MSc at IIT Kanpur (1972) and earned his PhD from Caltech (1978).
• He worked as a teaching assistant to Richard Feynman at Caltech and is known for research on the sandpile model and self-organised criticality.
• He became the first Indian recipient of the Boltzmann Medal in 2022 and received the Padma Bhushan in 2023.
• Key Facts: Statistical mechanics studies systems containing large numbers of particles using probability and mathematical methods; Paul Dirac was a pioneering British theoretical physicist and a founder of modern quantum mechanics.
