APPOINTMENT

Sundarraj P Appointed Inspector General in NIA

• The Union Government appointed IPS officer Sundarraj P (Sundarraj Pattilingam) as an Inspector General in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on 16 June 2026.

• He is a 2003-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and was serving in Chhattisgarh before his deputation.

• The NIA is India's premier counter-terrorism investigation agency established under the NIA Act, 2008.

• Sundarraj P served in Bastar Range for nearly 12 years, including seven years as Inspector General of Police.

• He played a key role in anti-Naxal operations and coordinated security efforts with central paramilitary forces.

• The Ministry of Home Affairs approved his deputation and directed the Chhattisgarh Government to relieve him for central service.

• Bastar, one of the most Naxal-affected regions in India, comprises seven districts in southern Chhattisgarh.

• The NIA investigates terrorism, insurgency, and other scheduled offences affecting India's sovereignty, security, and integrity.

U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Renamed Back to U.S. Pacific Command

• The United States renamed the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command back to the U.S. Pacific Command on 16–17 June 2026.

• The command was originally established on 1 January 1947 by U.S. President Harry S. Truman after World War II.

• It operated as the U.S. Pacific Command until 2018, when it was renamed the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.

• The 2018 renaming reflected the strategic importance of both the Indian and Pacific Oceans in regional security.

• The command is the oldest and largest unified combatant command of the United States Armed Forces.

• Its headquarters are located at Camp H. M. Smith in Hawaii.

• Its area of responsibility extends from the U.S. West Coast to the western boundary of India, covering a vast strategic region.

• The renaming is administrative in nature and does not alter the command’s mission, personnel strength, operational responsibilities, or geographical scope.

10th Thailand–India Defence Dialogue Held in Bangkok

• The 10th Thailand–India Defence Dialogue was held in Bangkok on 16 June 2026 to review bilateral defence cooperation.

• The meeting was co-chaired by Admiral Nuttapol Diewvanich of Thailand and Satyajit Mohanty of India's Ministry of Defence.

• Both countries discussed military-to-military engagements, training exchanges, capacity-building programmes, and maritime cooperation.

• Defence manufacturing, research, innovation, and capability development were identified as key areas for future collaboration.

• India and Thailand reviewed progress under their Strategic Partnership, which was established in 2025.

• The dialogue also focused on cooperation through regional and multilateral defence mechanisms, including ASEAN-led frameworks.

• Both sides exchanged views on security developments and strategic challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

• The dialogue reaffirmed commitment to strengthening joint exercises, naval coordination, sea-lane security, and overall defence ties.

SpaceX Becomes the World’s Fifth Most Valuable Company

• SpaceX became the world's fifth most valuable company on 16 June 2026 after its market value surpassed that of Amazon.

• Founded by Elon Musk in 2002, SpaceX was listed on the Nasdaq on 12 June 2026 under the ticker symbol SPCX.

• The company's IPO raised $75 billion initially, increasing to $85.7 billion after the over-allotment option was exercised, making it the largest IPO in history.

• SpaceX shares debuted at $135, and the company's valuation briefly reached about $2.97 trillion on 16 June 2026.

• At market close, SpaceX's valuation stood near $2.66 trillion, slightly ahead of Amazon's market capitalisation of about $2.65 trillion.

• The company reported revenue of $18.7 billion in 2025, though it recorded a net loss of $4.9 billion during the year.

• In the first quarter of 2026, SpaceX generated $4.69 billion in revenue and reported a net loss of $4.27 billion.

• SpaceX also announced a $60 billion stock deal to acquire Anysphere, the parent company of the AI coding startup Cursor, with completion expected in the third quarter of 2026.

NATIONAL NEWS

Namo Cities (Namo Nodes) under NCR Regional Plan 2041

• Four new greenfield cities, known as Namo Cities or Namo Nodes, have been proposed under the NCR Regional Plan 2041.

• The proposal was announced after the 42nd meeting of the NCR Planning Board on 16 June 2026.

• One Namo City will be developed in each NCR participating state—Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

• These cities will follow the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model around existing and proposed Namo Bharat (RRTS) stations.

• The project aims to create integrated urban centres with housing, employment, public services, and mass transit connectivity.

• A ₹5,000 crore performance-linked incentive package, including a ₹1,000 crore grant, will support development over five years.

• States will compete through a challenge-based selection process; UP has proposed Jewar, Dadri, Khurja, Bulandshahr, and Noida, while Rajasthan is considering Alwar and Bharatpur.

• The NCR Regional Plan 2041 focuses on planned urban growth, transport connectivity, environmental sustainability, and balanced regional development, with NCR's population projected to reach nearly 15 crore by 2041.

Allahabad High Court on Juvenile Conviction and Passport (29 May 2026) – 8 Key Points

• The Allahabad High Court held that a conviction suffered during juvenility cannot be a ground for denying a passport.

• The Court treated the juvenile "Right to be Forgotten" under Section 24 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 as an absolute right.

• The judgment was delivered by a Division Bench of Justice Ajit Kumar and Justice Indrajeet Shukla.

• The case involved Mohd. Yunus Ansari, whose passport application was rejected on the basis of a criminal case from his juvenile years.

• The Court observed that Section 24 removes the disqualification attached to a juvenile conviction and protects future opportunities.

• The Court linked the Right to Travel Abroad with Article 21 (Right to Life and Personal Liberty) of the Constitution.

• The passport rejection order issued by the Regional Passport Officer, Lucknow, was quashed and set aside.

• The authorities were directed to reconsider the passport application without taking the juvenile conviction into account, unless another legal bar exists.

RBI Reelathon 2026: Financial Cyber Safety Awareness Campaign

• The Reserve Bank of India launched RBI Reelathon 2026 on 16 June 2026 at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, to promote financial cyber awareness among students.

• The campaign targets students from around 150 colleges across Kerala through a multi-phase outreach programme.

• The first phase focuses on smart borrowing practices, safe digital banking, and protection against online financial frauds.

• In the second phase, students will create short reels on topics such as illegal loan apps, mule accounts, cyber frauds, and cyber hygiene.

• The campaign highlights common cyber threats, including fake job offers, investment scams, digital arrest frauds, and fraudulent loan applications.

• Special emphasis is placed on the ‘Golden Hour’, the crucial period immediately after a cyber fraud when quick reporting can help recover funds.

• The competition will conclude with a grand finale, offering cash prizes of ₹75,000, ₹50,000, and ₹25,000 to the top three winners.

• Selected awareness content will be shared through official platforms of the RBI, Kerala Police, banks, and other partner institutions to enhance public awareness.

PM Modi Holds Bilateral Meetings with Canada, UK and UAE at G7 Summit

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the leaders of Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates on 16 June 2026 on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France.

• During his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, discussions focused on trade, energy, innovation, education, and people-to-people ties.

• The India–Canada talks aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across key economic and strategic sectors.

• PM Modi also met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to review the progress of India–UK relations.

• The two leaders discussed enhancing economic cooperation and implementation of the recently concluded trade agreement framework.

• In talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, both sides reviewed the India–UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

• The India–UAE meeting also focused on regional peace, security, stability in West Asia, and expanding economic cooperation.
