Supreme Court Invokes Article 142 to Set Aside POCSO Conviction
• The Supreme Court used its extraordinary powers under Article 142 to quash a conviction under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
• Article 142 empowers the Supreme Court to pass any decree or order necessary to ensure "complete justice" in matters pending before it.
• This constitutional provision enables the Court to provide equitable relief where strict application of law may result in injustice.
• The POCSO Act, 2012 was enacted to safeguard children below 18 years from sexual abuse, exploitation, and related offences.
• The Act criminalises penetrative and non-penetrative sexual assault, sexual harassment, and the use of children in pornographic activities.
• POCSO is a gender-neutral legislation and recognises that minors cannot legally consent to sexual activity.
• It provides child-friendly procedures, including Special Courts, in-camera trials, and video-recorded testimonies to minimise trauma to victims.
• The Act also prescribes stringent punishment for offences involving child trafficking and sexual exploitation, depending on the gravity of the crime.
AFSPA Likely to be Withdrawn from Most of the Northeast by 2027
• Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) may be removed from almost the entire Northeast by 2027, except in one or two States.
• The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 empowers security forces to operate in areas officially notified as "disturbed areas" to tackle insurgency and maintain public order.
• A disturbed area can be declared by the State Governor, the Administrator of a Union Territory, or the Central Government.
• AFSPA authorises armed forces to use force under specified circumstances, arrest without warrant, conduct searches without warrant, and destroy militant hideouts or arms caches.
• The Act grants legal protection to personnel, as prosecution or legal proceedings require prior sanction from the Central Government.
• The Justice B.P. Jeevan Reddy Committee (2005) recommended repealing AFSPA and incorporating essential provisions into the UAPA with stronger accountability measures.
• The Santosh Hegde Commission (2013) highlighted misuse of AFSPA in Manipur encounter cases and called for greater transparency and periodic review.
• The Second Administrative Reforms Commission (2007) also favoured repeal, observing that AFSPA had become a symbol of alienation in affected regions.

Dinesh Trivedi Assumes Charge as India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh
• India appointed Dinesh Trivedi as High Commissioner to Bangladesh on 27 April 2026, making him the first political appointee to a South Asian ambassadorial post in over three decades.
• He received his Letters of Credence from Droupadi Murmu on 5 June 2026 and formally took charge in Dhaka on 12 June 2026.
• A High Commissioner heads diplomatic missions in Commonwealth countries, and India uses this designation for its mission in Bangladesh.
• Letters of Credence are official documents issued by a head of state to authorise and accredit an envoy in the receiving country.
• Trivedi entered Bangladesh through the Benapole–Petrapole land port, one of the busiest border crossings between India and Bangladesh.
• Before entering diplomacy, Dinesh Trivedi served as India's Union Railway Minister and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after leaving the Trinamool Congress in 2021.
• He succeeded Pranay Verma, who completed his tenure in Dhaka and was subsequently appointed as India's Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
• Ahead of assuming office, Trivedi visited the Netaji Bhavan memorial in Kolkata and held discussions with Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi on defence cooperation, border management, and military engagement.

Draft Telecommunications Rules, 2026 Propose Unified Framework for Broadcasting Services
• On 12 June 2026, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting released the draft Telecommunications (Television, Radio and Associated Services) Rules, 2026, inviting public feedback until 27 July 2026.
• The proposed rules seek to establish a single regulatory framework for television, radio, DTH, HITS, community radio, and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services.
• The draft derives its legal authority from the Telecommunications Act, 2023, which replaced the colonial-era Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.
• Services covered include television channels, channel distribution platforms, teleports, television news agencies, private FM radio, and community radio stations.
• A new digital authorisation system has been proposed, classifying licences into six categories and eliminating the requirement of signing a Grant of Permission Agreement (GOPA).
• The framework also introduces a transparent adjudication mechanism to address regulatory and compliance-related matters.
• Television channels will be required to broadcast at least 30 minutes of content of national importance and social relevance every day between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.
• The draft proposes licence periods of 10 years for TV channels and community radio stations, 20 years for DTH and HITS operators, and 15 years for private FM broadcasters, with no provision for renewal of private FM licences.

India Expands Trade Agreements to Achieve Vision 2047 Goals
• India expanded trade ties with the EU, New Zealand, EFTA, Canada, and the US in 2026 to support its goal of becoming a $30–35 trillion economy by 2047.
• The India–EU FTA grants immediate duty-free access to 70.4% of tariff lines, covering over 90.7% of India's exports to the European Union.
• Under the India–New Zealand FTA, Indian exports received full duty-free access, while India liberalised tariffs on about 70% of tariff lines.
• The India–EFTA agreement is expected to attract USD 100 billion in investments and create nearly one million direct jobs over 15 years.
• India and Canada resumed CEPA negotiations with the objective of achieving USD 50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.
• A CEPA is broader than an FTA, covering areas such as goods, services, investment, and regulatory cooperation.
• India's exports reached USD 860.09 billion in FY 2025–26, while imports stood at nearly USD 970 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of USD 119.3 billion.
• India aims to achieve USD 10 trillion in exports by 2047 and has signed nine FTAs covering 38 countries in recent years.

Mizoram Leads Special Intensive Revision Digitisation Drive
• As of 12 June 2026, Mizoram achieved 68.05% digitisation of enumeration forms, securing the top position among 16 states and 3 Union Territories participating in the exercise.
• The Special Intensive Revision (SIR), conducted by the Election Commission of India, is aimed at updating and refining electoral rolls across the country.
• In Mizoram, the revision process commenced on 20 May 2026, while the enumeration phase is scheduled to continue until 28 June 2026.
• Khawzawl district emerged as the best-performing district with 96.16% digitisation, followed by Champhai at 92.57% and Serchhip at 90.93%.
• The state recorded an impressive 99.90% distribution of enumeration forms through 1,301 Block Level Officers (BLOs).
• Block Level Officers play a crucial role in voter verification, household surveys, and the distribution and collection of electoral forms.
• Electoral rolls are official lists of eligible voters prepared for each Assembly constituency and updated through periodic revision exercises.
• The Election Commission of India, established under Article 324 of the Constitution, oversees electoral roll management to ensure accurate and inclusive voter records.

FIFA World Cup 2026: Biggest Edition in Tournament History Begins
• The 23rd FIFA World Cup commenced on 11 June 2026, launching a historic 39-day global football tournament.
• For the first time, the event is being jointly hosted by three countries—United States (11 cities), Mexico (3), and Canada (2).
• The tournament has expanded from 32 to 48 teams, making it the largest FIFA World Cup ever.
• The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two teams and the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the Round of 32.
• The total number of matches has increased from 64 to 104, and teams reaching the final will now play eight matches.
• Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan are making their maiden appearances at the FIFA World Cup.
• Argentina enters the tournament as the defending champion after winning its third World Cup title in 2022.
