RANKING AND REPORTS

Pakistan Faces Widening Gender Pay Disparity: Reports

• Recent reports by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Economic Forum (WEF) highlight Pakistan's significant gender wage gap.

• On average, Pakistani women earn 34% less than men, which is significantly higher than the global average gap of 20%.

• The country fares worse than its neighbors — India (25%), Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka — and has made little to no progress in closing the gap.

• Contributing factors include deep-rooted cultural norms, institutional barriers, and the prevalence of informal employment for women in sectors like agriculture, domestic work, and cottage industries.

• These informal jobs often lack contracts, job stability, or social security.

• As per the 2025 WEF Global Gender Gap Report, Pakistan ranks 151 out of 156 countries in gender equality, with particularly low scores in economic participation.
