Supreme Court on Fishing Access in Tamil Nadu

• On 2 September 2026, the Supreme Court directed the Tamil Nadu government to frame rules for a designated channel allowing fishing vessels to pass through territorial waters to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

• The case was heard by Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe and concerned vessels using purse seine nets.

• India’s territorial waters extend up to 12 nautical miles, while the EEZ extends up to 200 nautical miles from the baseline under the UNCLOS framework.

• Fishing within 12 nautical miles is regulated by the Tamil Nadu Marine Fishing Regulation Rules, 2020, while offshore fishing is governed by the Exclusive Economic Zone Rules, 2025.

• The Court linked fishing access with Article 19(1)(g), holding that prolonged delay in processing permits can effectively create an unwritten restriction on the right to carry on an occupation.

• Fishing permissions in Tamil Nadu are processed through the ReALCRaft Portal. As of 3 August 2026, 226 of 257 applications remained pending, with only six permits granted.

• The Court directed the Union and State authorities to coordinate in processing fishing permits and ensuring access to offshore waters.

• The petitions filed by Fisherman Care and individual fishermen seeking access to offshore waters were disposed of by the Supreme Court.

APPOINTMENT

Telangana Cabinet and Key Appointments

• Telangana CM A. Revanth Reddy removed Konda Surekha, Minister for Environment, Forests and Endowments, from the Council of Ministers with immediate effect on 3 September 2026.

• On the same day, the appointment of G. Chinna Reddy as Vice Chairman of the Telangana State Planning Board was withdrawn.

• Gadwal Vijayalakshmi was appointed as the new Vice Chairperson of the Telangana State Planning Board.

• Nerella Sharada was approved as the Chairperson of the Telangana State Commission for Women.

• The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee Disciplinary Committee had recommended action against Konda Surekha and G. Chinna Reddy in August 2026.

• Under Article 164, the Council of Ministers of a State is headed by the Chief Minister, while ministers are appointed by the Governor on the CM’s advice.

• State ministers hold their portfolios as assigned by the Chief Minister and continue in office during the Governor’s pleasure, subject to constitutional provisions.

• The State Planning Board is concerned with development planning and policy coordination, while the State Commission for Women deals with women’s rights and welfare.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India–Canada Foreign Office Consultations 2026

• India and Canada held annual Foreign Office Consultations on 2 September 2026 at Hyderabad House, New Delhi.

• The Indian delegation was led by MEA Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon, while Canada was represented by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Thangaraj.

• The consultations reviewed cooperation in energy, critical minerals, science & technology, education, security, defence, culture and consular matters.

• Both sides reaffirmed their target to conclude negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of 2026.

• India and Canada retained the goal of more than doubling bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion by 2030.

• India expressed readiness to begin negotiations with Canada on a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT).

• Both countries noted sustained high-level exchanges since June 2025 and reaffirmed commitment to democracy, sovereignty, territorial integrity and rule of law.

• Foreign Office Consultations are a regular diplomatic mechanism used to review bilateral relations and political, economic and strategic cooperation.

Joshua Wong Pleads Guilty Under Hong Kong National Security Law

• Joshua Wong, a 29-year-old pro-democracy activist, pleaded guilty on 2 September 2026 to conspiracy to collude with foreign forces at Hong Kong’s High Court.

• The case concerns alleged contacts with foreign politicians and calls for sanctions after Hong Kong’s National Security Law came into force in 2020.

• The Hong Kong National Security Law came into force in June 2020, criminalising secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces.

• Conspiracy to collude with foreign forces can carry 3–10 years’ imprisonment, while a grave offence may attract life imprisonment.

• Wong was earlier sentenced to 4 years and 8 months on 19 November 2024 in the separate Hong Kong 47 national security case.

• He had remained in continuous custody since November 2020 and was originally due for release in January 2027.

• The present case was transferred from the Magistrates’ Court to the High Court in May 2026; no immediate sentencing date was fixed after his guilty plea.

• Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of China operating under the “one country, two systems” framework.

GIFT IFSC Expands International Banking Activity

• GIFT IFSC, India’s first operational International Financial Services Centre, is located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat and is regulated by IFSCA.

• Under the RBI’s special FCNR(B) swap facility, 20 International Banking Units (IBUs) sanctioned USD 54.02 billion by 31 August 2026, with USD 52.82 billion disbursed.

• The sanctioned amount increased from USD 28.60 billion (14 August) to USD 37.26 billion (21 August) and then to USD 54.02 billion by 31 August.

• IBUs at GIFT IFSC disbursed USD 11.62 billion in External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs) between April and August 2026.

• Monthly ECB disbursements increased from USD 1.54 billion in April to USD 3.54 billion in August 2026.

• Indian banks raised USD 11.12 billion through bond listings on GIFT IFSC exchanges during April–August, with USD 9.17 billion listed in July–August.

• IFSCA, established under the IFSCA Act, 2019, is India’s unified regulator for financial products, services and institutions in IFSCs.

• FCNR(B) means Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) deposits, while ECBs are foreign-currency borrowings raised by eligible Indian entities from non-resident lenders.

Gollalagudi Temple Declared Monument of National Importance

• Gollalagudi Temple (Gollala Gudi) in Palampet, Mulugu district, Telangana, was declared a Monument of National Importance on 1 September 2026.

• The declaration was made through a Gazette notification by the Union Ministry of Culture and Tourism, taking ASI-protected monuments in Telangana to 10.

• Protection is provided under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) responsible for conservation and maintenance.

• Gollalagudi is a Trikutalaya temple, featuring three sanctums (garbhagrihas) connected to an east-facing mandapa.

• The temple is broadly associated with Kakatiya-era architecture and is believed to date to the 12th–13th centuries CE.

• Its exact construction date and original dedication remain subjects of archaeological and epigraphic research.

• The ASI Hyderabad Circle will undertake conservation and minor repairs, including measures to address waterlogging and improve visitor pathways.

• A preliminary notification was issued on 7 March 2026, allowing two months for public objections and feedback before the final declaration.

36th Ig Nobel Prizes 2026

• The 36th Ig Nobel Prize ceremony was held on 3 September 2026 at the Zurich Convention Center, Switzerland, marking the first ceremony outside the United States.

• The Ig Nobel Prizes, organised by the Annals of Improbable Research, honour unusual and humorous scientific research.

• The Chemistry Prize went to Leonard Chavas, Ramaswamy Subramanian and Nathan Coussens for research on protein crystals in the milk of the Pacific beetle cockroach, which contains over three times the energy of cow’s milk.

• The Medicine Prize was awarded posthumously to Tokuji Unno for his 1977 study on the aerodynamics of nose-blowing.

• The Biomechanics Prize recognised Matilda Brindle, Stuart West and Catherine F. Talbot for scientifically defining kissing across ants, birds, polar bears and humans.

• The Soil Science Prize went to the “Underwear as Evidence” project, which used 2,000 buried cotton underwear pairs to assess soil health.

• The Economics Prize recognised research examining unethical behaviour among wealthier individuals, including an experiment involving candy intended for children.

• Winners received a novelty trophy and symbolic banknote; the 2026 trophy featured a mushroom and human foot, accompanied by a 10 trillion Zimbabwean dollar banknote.

SPORTS

Women’s Champions Trophy 2027

• The ICC named India as host of the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy 2027, scheduled for 14–28 February 2027.

• The tournament will feature six teams: Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

• It will follow a T20I round-robin format, with the top two teams qualifying for the final on 28 February 2027.

• Sri Lanka was removed as host due to unresolved governance issues and alleged government interference in Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

• The ICC considered Bangladesh, India and South Africa as replacement hosts before selecting India.

• Team qualification was based on the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings after the 2026 T20 World Cup, with 6 July 2026 as the cut-off date.

• The confirmed venues are Cricket Club of India, Mumbai, and Vadodara International Cricket Stadium.

• T20I stands for Twenty20 International, where each team is generally limited to 20 overs. The ICC was founded in 1909 as the Imperial Cricket Conference.

World Archery Para Series 2026

• India will host the Hyundai World Archery Para Series 2026 for the first time at Sabarmati Riverfront, Ahmedabad, from 5–9 September 2026.

• Ahmedabad will host Stage 3 of the 2026 series, following Stage 1 in Bangkok, Thailand, and Stage 2 in Nove Mesto, Czechia.

• The event will feature Recurve Open, Compound Open, W1 and Visually Impaired categories.

• It is being organised by the Archery Association of India, Government of Gujarat, Sports Authority of Gujarat and Sports Authority of India.

• The formal inauguration is scheduled for 4 September 2026 at The Forum – Hotel & Convention, Ahmedabad.

• A 29-member Indian squad trained at the SAI National Centre of Excellence, Gandhinagar, from 23 August to 2 September 2026.

• The squad includes Paris 2024 Paralympic medallists Harvinder Singh, Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar; 11 archers are also selected for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

• World Archery reported 109 athletes from 19 nations for the Ahmedabad stage, making India one of the three 2026 host nations alongside Thailand and Czechia.

DEFENCE

Aero India 2027

• The 16th edition of Aero India will be held at Yelahanka Air Force Station, Bengaluru, from 8–12 February 2027.

• The event was announced by the Ministry of Defence on 2 September 2026, with the Department of Defence Production as the primary organiser.

• Aero India is a biennial international aerospace and defence exhibition, widely regarded as Asia’s largest air show.

• The 2027 edition will use nine hangars (A–I); Hangars A and B are reserved for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and DRDO.

• Online registration and exhibition-space booking for international exhibitors will begin on 3 September 2026 through the Aero India portal.

• India’s defence exports reached a record ₹38,424 crore in FY 2025–26, covering missiles, aircraft components, electronics, ammunition and other defence systems.

• The previous 15th Aero India (2025) attracted around 900 exhibitors, including 150 international exhibitors, along with 26 Defence Ministers and 118 global CEOs.

• Aero India showcases India’s growing aerospace and defence ecosystem, including indigenous systems such as BrahMos and Akash.
