Supreme Court Deadline for Aravalli Hills Committee Report 2026

• The Supreme Court fixed 30 November 2026 as the non-extendable deadline for the High-Powered Committee to submit its final report on the definition and protection of the Aravalli Hills and Ranges.

• The five-member expert committee was constituted on 25 May 2026 under the chairpersonship of Kanchan Devi, Director General of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE).

• The committee had earlier missed its original deadline of 31 August 2026 and sought a six-month extension, which the Supreme Court rejected.

• The three-judge Bench, comprising CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana, heard the matter on 7 September 2026 and directed the committee to work expeditiously.

• The committee must examine the Aravalli landscape using spatial, ecological, geological, hydrological and socio-economic data and formulate recommendations for its protection.

• The Aravalli Range, one of India's oldest mountain systems, extends through Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi and Gujarat and is important for forest conservation, groundwater recharge and regulation of mining and land degradation.

• The Court directed the committee to hear all stakeholders, including local tribal communities of Rajasthan and Gujarat, and permitted issue-specific interim reports before submission of the final report.

• The next judicial review is scheduled for 2 December 2026; the committee's work is also relevant to conservation concerns raised by groups such as the Aravalli Virasat Jan Abhiyaan.

Stanzin Tsangyang – First Woman Army Officer from Zanskar

• Stanzin Tsangyang was commissioned into the Indian Army on 5 September 2026 at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, becoming the first woman officer from the Zanskar region of Ladakh.

• She was part of a batch of 342 cadets who successfully completed their training and were commissioned at the academy.

• The Officers Training Academy, Chennai is a major Indian Army training institution that primarily trains officers for Short Service Commission (SSC) and has played an important role in commissioning women officers.

• Zanskar is a remote, high-altitude region of Ladakh known for its difficult terrain and sparse population; it was part of Kargil district when Tsangyang enrolled.

• Tsangyang studied for 14 years at Lamdon Model School, Leh, and later pursued Mechanical Engineering at Tezpur University, Assam, on a scholarship.

• During her university studies, she joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC), a tri-services youth organisation functioning under the Ministry of Defence.

• Ladakh became a Union Territory on 31 October 2019 following the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir; Leh and Kargil were its two original districts, with Zanskar subsequently notified as a separate district in 2026.

• Her father Tundup Tsering, a schoolteacher, and mother Rigzin Ladol travelled from Ladakh to Chennai to attend her commissioning parade, marking a significant milestone for women from the region.

EU Debate on Social Media Ban for Children Under 15

• French President Emmanuel Macron has urged European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to support an EU-wide ban on social media for children under 15 across all 27 EU member states.

• The proposal seeks a common European legislative framework to harmonise youth online-safety rules, covering issues such as child protection, privacy, data processing and freedom of expression.

• France had earlier passed a law restricting social media access for under-15s; the French Constitutional Council struck it down on 14 August 2026, holding that the blanket restriction disproportionately affected privacy and freedom of expression and communication.

• The French Parliament had approved the law on 21 July 2026, with implementation planned for September 2026, but the Constitutional Council's ruling prevented its implementation in that form.

• Following the ruling, the Élysée Palace stated that Macron directed Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to prepare a revised national bill consistent with constitutional requirements.

• Ursula von der Leyen has supported stronger online protections for children but previously favoured a tiered approach, including supervised access for children under 13, rather than an outright ban for everyone below 15.

• European countries have adopted differing approaches: France and Spain favour stricter age restrictions, while several Scandinavian countries place greater emphasis on parental discretion.

• The debate highlights the balance between child online safety and fundamental rights, particularly privacy and freedom of expression and communication; a blanket ban applies uniformly, whereas a tiered system imposes different restrictions according to age.

Skill Manthan 2026 – Building Sustainable Livelihoods for Women

• The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) hosted the virtual inaugural session of Skill Manthan on 9 September 2026 with the theme “Building Sustainable Livelihoods for Women.”

• The national webinar series focused on district-led skilling, entrepreneurship, financial access, technology and market linkages for sustainable livelihoods.

• Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge), MSDE, delivered the keynote address, while MSDE Secretary Debashree Mukherjee highlighted the concept of “hyperlocal skilling.”

• Hyperlocal skilling aims to align skill training with district-specific employment opportunities, economic conditions and local labour-market requirements.

• The webinar showcased district-level initiatives for women’s economic empowerment, combining vocational training with entrepreneurship, finance, technology and market access.

• Bijnor and Meerut District Magistrates Jasjit Kaur and Dr. Vijay Kumar Singh, respectively, presented district strategies from Uttar Pradesh.

• Dr. G. Lakshmisha, District Collector of NTR District, Andhra Pradesh, presented district-led approaches for generating sustainable livelihoods for women.

• District Skill Development Plans (DSDPs) help align training with local industry needs, with Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) serving as an important source of employment and livelihood opportunities.

World Archery Para Series 2026 – Stage 3

• India won 15 medals—4 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze—at the World Archery Para Series 2026 Stage 3, held at Sabarmati Riverfront, Ahmedabad, from 5–9 September 2026.

• The Ahmedabad event was the first World Archery Para Series tournament hosted by India and was organised under World Archery, the international governing body for archery and para-archery.

• Sheetal Devi (19) won her first individual World Archery Para Series title in the women’s compound event, defeating Kazakhstan’s Aizada Seidan in a 10–9 shoot-off after the final ended 144–144.

• In qualification, Sheetal Devi scored 698 points, improving her own Asian record in the event.

• Bhawna and Harvinder Singh won gold in recurve mixed team, defeating China’s Liang Qiurong and Xia Lei 6–0 in the final.

• Sheetal Devi and Toman Kumar won bronze in compound mixed team, while Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar set a mixed-team world record of 1,400 points during qualification.

• Toman Kumar won bronze in the men’s individual compound event by defeating Iraq’s Abbas Kadhim 143–138, while Bhawna secured bronze in the women’s individual recurve event.

• In para-archery, compound bows use cams and pulleys, while recurve bows have curved limbs; a shoot-off determines the winner when a match remains tied after the scheduled arrows.

India’s 20th Asian Games Contingent 2026

• The 503-member Indian contingent received an official send-off in New Delhi on 8 September 2026 for the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

• The Games will be held from 19 September to 4 October 2026, with Indian athletes competing in 36 sporting disciplines.

• The Asian Games are a four-yearly continental multi-sport event organised under the Olympic Council of Asia, featuring Olympic as well as non-Olympic sports.

• More than 300 Indian athletes are Asian Games debutants, making the 2026 contingent notable for its large number of first-time participants.

• Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Dr. P.T. Usha, Hari Ranjan Rao and Chef de Mission Sahdev Yadav unveiled the Indian contingent’s official jersey at the send-off ceremony.

• Cricket is included in the Asian Games programme and is played in the T20 format; the Indian men’s and women’s teams will stay at designated hotels in Nagoya, Japan.

• BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla stated that the BCCI had agreed to the accommodation arrangements finalised by the Aichi-Nagoya organisers.

• Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted a 10-year sports plan with an allocation exceeding ₹36,000 crore for sports infrastructure, linked to India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

2026 Pickleball World Cup

• The 2026 Pickleball World Cup was held in Da Nang, Vietnam, from 30 August 2026, with India finishing fourth in the overall medal standings.

• India won a total of 41 medals—7 gold, 17 silver and 17 bronze, improving from its seventh-place finish in the previous World Cup.

• The 2026 edition was the first Pickleball World Cup hosted in Asia, with final event coverage recording participation from 82 countries.

• Indian gold medallists included Fayrouz Zaidi (40+ Women’s Singles), Vivek Reddy (40+ Men’s Singles), Kiran Salian (50+ Men’s Singles) and Purvansh Patel (Boys Under-18 Singles).

• Bhushan Akut achieved a golden hat-trick in the 60+ category by winning Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles with Ashok Rohira and Mixed Doubles with Elizabeth Wilcox.

• The Indian Kids team, captained by Veer Shah, won silver in the national-team event after defeating Japan 3–0 in the semi-final and losing to the United States in the final.

• The Indian Pickleball Association conducted three-day national selection trials in Ahmedabad on 14 June 2026, while India sent a delegation of 48 athletes to the World Cup.

• Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis; the Indian Pickleball Association has identified grassroots development as a major focus following India’s 41-medal performance.

DEFENCE

Dronathon-2026

• The Indian Air Force (IAF) will organise Dronathon-2026 at the Pokhran Range, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, from 14–16 September 2026.

• The three-day event will focus on Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (CUAS) for defence and modern warfare applications.

• UAS are aircraft systems operating without an onboard pilot and generally comprise an air vehicle, ground control station, communication links and mission payloads.

• CUAS technologies are designed to detect, track, identify, disrupt or neutralise hostile drones, using systems such as radar, radio-frequency detection, jamming and interception.

• Dronathon-2026 will feature static displays and live tactical demonstrations, testing drone systems in surveillance, reconnaissance, autonomous flight and electronic-warfare environments.

• Swarm drone technology will be a key focus, involving multiple unmanned platforms operating in a coordinated manner through networked control or autonomous algorithms.

• The Pokhran Range in Jaisalmer, located in the Thar Desert, is a major military testing area used for weapons trials, field exercises and defence demonstrations.

• The event will bring together domestic manufacturers, defence startups and innovators, supporting indigenous development of UAS and CUAS technologies under the broader objective of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Veer Guardian-2026

• The Indian Air Force (IAF) and Japan Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF) are conducting Veer Guardian-2026, a bilateral air-defence exercise at Air Force Station Jodhpur, Rajasthan, from 9–22 September 2026.

• It is the second edition of the exercise, following the inaugural edition held in Japan in 2023, and is aimed at strengthening India–Japan air-force cooperation.

• Veer Guardian-2026 marks the first operational deployment of Japanese fighter aircraft at an Indian air base during the exercise.

• The IAF is participating with Tejas, Su-30 MKI and Rafale fighter aircraft, while Japan has deployed three Mitsubishi F-2A fighters from the 8th Wing at Tsuiki Air Base, Fukuoka.

• The Japanese contingent comprises around 110 personnel and reached India using C-2 transport aircraft for personnel and logistical movement.

• The Japanese F-2A fighters travelled through Naha Air Base in Okinawa and Thailand, receiving aerial-refuelling support from the US Air Force during their transit.

• Training activities include air-combat manoeuvring, operational planning, aerospace safety and engineering exchanges, enhancing interoperability and professional cooperation between the two air forces.

• The Mitsubishi F-2A is a Japanese multirole fighter developed with United States assistance, while the exercise reflects growing India–Japan defence cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

SUMMIT AND CONFERENCE

18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit 2026

• India will host the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit on 12–13 September 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, under its 2026 BRICS chairship, marking 20 years of the grouping.

• BRICS originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining later; the expanded grouping now has 11 members.

• The 11 members are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

• India’s 2026 summit theme is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, focusing on resilient supply chains, financial cooperation and sustainable development.

• Key agenda areas include cross-border payment integration, greater use of national currencies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and reforms in multilateral financial institutions.

• The New Development Bank (NDB), established by BRICS members in 2014, is an important institution associated with BRICS financial cooperation.

• During its 2026 presidency, India has organised 350+ BRICS-related meetings across more than 25 Indian cities; the BRICS Business Forum and Women’s Business Alliance session will be held on 11 September at Bharat Mandapam.

• Russian President Vladimir Putin is confirmed to attend in person, while Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend; if confirmed, it would be his first visit to India since 2019.

27th World Knowledge Forum 2026

• The 27th World Knowledge Forum (WKF) opened in Seoul, South Korea, on 8 September 2026 and will continue until 10 September 2026 at Jangchung Arena and The Shilla Seoul.

• The three-day forum is organised by Maekyung Media Group and brings together political leaders, business executives, academics and technology experts to discuss global economic and technological issues.

• The 2026 theme is “The Promethean Moment: Architecting the Co-Intelligence Order”, focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI), co-intelligence and global economic transformation.

• Discussions examine the impact of AI on national security, labour markets, productivity and global competitiveness, while co-intelligence emphasises human–machine collaboration in decision-making.

• Former British Prime Minister David Cameron delivered the opening keynote, titled “A New Order of Coexistence in the Age of AI”.

• Cho Jeong-sik, Speaker of the South Korean National Assembly, addressed ethical concerns including job displacement and human alienation, while WKF founder Dr. Chang Dae-whan spoke on AI and civilisational change.

• Major sessions included “Personal AI, Change Your Daily Life” and “Quantum Computing and Cybersecurity”, highlighting emerging technologies and their implications for society and security.

• Former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt attended the opening; Jose Ma. Concepcion III and Don Lam received the ASEAN Entrepreneurs Award, while discussions also featured AI glasses and augmented reality.

7th India-Japan Joint Working Group on Forestry Cooperation 2026

• The 7th Meeting of the India-Japan Joint Working Group on Forestry Cooperation was held in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on 8 September 2026.

• The Indian delegation was led by Ramesh Kumar Pandey, Additional Director General (Forests), MoEFCC, while the Japanese delegation was led by Shimizu Kotaro, Deputy Director General of Japan’s Forestry Agency.

• India and Japan established the Joint Working Group mechanism under the 2015 Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in forestry and resource management.

• Key technical areas discussed included Tree Outside Forests (TOF), Forest Genetics and Forest Stack, covering sustainable management and development of forest resources.

• Tree Outside Forests refers to trees growing on farms, field boundaries, homesteads, roadsides and other non-forest lands, and is relevant to agroforestry and urban tree management.

• Both countries endorsed the Roadmap for 2027–2031, and the meeting concluded with the signing of the Minutes of the 7th Joint Working Group.

• The bilateral programme included visits to sandalwood agro-forestry farms, a sandalwood depot and a processing facility in Mysuru, followed by a visit to the Institute of Wood Science and Technology, Bengaluru.

• A field visit to Nagarhole Tiger Reserve was scheduled for 10 September 2026 to facilitate exchange of knowledge on wildlife conservation and forest-management practices.
