Luke Lindberg – New Executive Director of WFP 2026

• Luke Lindberg, a U.S. agriculture official, was appointed Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) on 18 September 2026.

• His appointment was confirmed by the WFP Executive Board and announced jointly by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu.

• The World Food Programme (WFP) is the food-assistance agency of the United Nations, headquartered in Rome, Italy.

• WFP focuses on hunger relief, food assistance and emergency humanitarian logistics and is one of the largest humanitarian organisations in the UN system.

• The Executive Director is the WFP’s chief administrative officer and serves a five-year term; Lindberg became the youngest person to lead the organisation at the age of 37.

• Before his appointment, Lindberg served as Undersecretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

• Lindberg was nominated by U.S. President Donald Trump, and the WFP leadership position has been held by an American since the early 1990s.

• WFP received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 for its efforts to combat hunger and contribute to peace in conflict-affected areas; the organisation aimed to assist around 110 million people in 2026 amid continuing global food-security challenges.

Hansraj Singh Verma – India’s Ambassador to Cuba 2026

• Hansraj Singh Verma, a 2008-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to the Republic of Cuba.

• The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced his appointment on 18 September 2026, and he is expected to take charge in Havana shortly.

• Before this appointment, Verma served as Consul General of India at São Paulo, Brazil.

• The Indian Foreign Service (IFS) is India’s diplomatic service under the Ministry of External Affairs, with officers serving in Indian missions abroad and at the MEA headquarters.

• India and Cuba established diplomatic relations in 1959, with India among the early countries to recognise the new Cuban government.

• The Embassy of India in Havana is responsible for representing India and handling bilateral political, economic and consular matters in Cuba.

• Havana is the capital of Cuba, an island country located in the Caribbean Sea.

• T. Armstrong Changsan, the outgoing Ambassador of India to Cuba, has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Armenia.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India–Japan Year of Shared Horizons 2027

• India and Japan will mark 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2027 with the observance of the India-Japan Year of Shared Horizons, commemorating ties established in 1952.

• The two countries maintain a Special Strategic and Global Partnership, covering politics, economy, defence, security, technology and people-to-people exchanges.

• The week of 28 April 2027 will be observed as India-Japan Week, featuring outreach programmes, business roundtables and India-focused roadshows.

• A friendship cricket match during the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 will serve as a curtain-raiser for the 75th-anniversary celebrations.

• SPORT-75 will promote sports exchanges, while Cricket Kizuna-75 will involve Indian cricket coaches visiting Japan.

• IMAGE-75 will focus on partnerships in manga, anime and gaming, while RASA-75 will promote cooperation in arts and culture.

• Shared Future-75 will focus on developing policy recommendations, with the wider celebrations involving youth programmes in business, sports, science, technology, arts and culture.

• Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched a public 75th-anniversary logo competition in August 2026, with submissions closing on 15 September 2026; cooperation also covers defence, infrastructure, trade and technology.

NATIONAL NEWS

SEMICON India 2026 and Semicon 2.0

• SEMICON India 2026, the 5th edition, is being held from 17–19 September 2026 at Yashobhoomi (India International Convention and Expo Centre), Dwarka, New Delhi.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the event on 17 September 2026, which focuses on India’s semiconductor policy, manufacturing and design ecosystem.

• Semicon 2.0, approved by the Union Cabinet in July 2026, is the next phase of India’s semiconductor programme with an outlay of ₹1.275 trillion (US$13.23 billion).

• Semicon 2.0 has six pillars: chip design; machines and materials; fabrication facilities; advanced packaging; applied R&D; and talent development.

• The programme has received investment commitments of around ₹1 lakh crore (US$11–12 billion), expected to materialise over the next 2–3 years.

• Applied Materials announced a US$5 billion investment over the next decade under its India Vision 2035 programme for research, supplier development and talent development.

• Semicon 2.0 aims to create nearly 1 lakh jobs, train 1 lakh technicians for cleanroom and factory-floor roles, and support at least 200 chip-design start-ups and companies.

• The programme expands support across the semiconductor value chain, including design, fabrication, advanced packaging, research and skill development, strengthening applications in electronics, automobiles, telecom, defence and industrial equipment.

SPORTS

AIFF U15 Women’s Youth League 2026

• The All India Football Federation (AIFF) will launch the inaugural U15 Women’s Youth League on 15 October 2026.

• The league will be held at the Sporting Planet Sports Complex in Belagavi, Karnataka, and the final is scheduled for 31 October 2026.

• A total of 16 teams from across India will participate in the inaugural edition.

• The teams will be divided into four groups of four teams each in the opening stage.

• The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and final.

• Participating teams include SESA Football Academy, HOPS FC, Roots FC, Krida Prabodhini Pune, Sethu FC, PFC Kerala, Mumbai Knights FC and Belgaum United Football Academy, among others.

• The U15 Women’s Youth League follows the AIFF U17 Women’s Youth League, which was launched in July 2026.

• The competition forms part of the AIFF’s age-group development pathway for women’s football, with U15 and U17 competitions aimed at developing young female footballers in India.

Yugan Sakthivel Muthukumaar – ISSF Junior World Cup Shotgun 2026

• Yugan Sakthivel Muthukumaar, a 15-year-old Indian shooter, won the gold medal in men’s trap at the ISSF Junior World Cup Shotgun 2026 in Porpetto, Italy, on 18 September 2026.

• He scored 27 hits in the eight-shooter final to secure the gold medal.

• His victory gave India its first medal at the Porpetto meet.

• Yugan qualified for the final in sixth position with 114/125 and entered the medal round after winning a shoot-off.

• Francesco Tanfoglio of Italy won the silver medal with 26 hits in the final.

• Trap shooting is a shotgun discipline in which athletes fire at clay targets launched from a trap house at varying angles.

• The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) is the global governing body for Olympic-style shooting sports, including rifle, pistol and shotgun disciplines.

• The ISSF Junior World Cup Shotgun is an international junior-level competition conducted under the ISSF framework, providing young shooters with competition experience in shotgun events such as trap.

Pawan Sehrawat – India’s Male Flag-Bearer at Asian Games 2026

• Pawan Sehrawat, an Indian kabaddi player, was named India’s male flag-bearer for the Asian Games 2026 opening ceremony on 19 September 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

• Sehrawat replaced shot-putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor as the male flag-bearer, while shooter Manu Bhaker continued as the female flag-bearer.

• The Asian Games are a continental multi-sport event organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and are held once every four years.

• The flag-bearer is the athlete selected to carry the national flag during the opening ceremony, generally representing the country’s sporting contingent.

• Pawan Sehrawat was part of India’s gold-winning men’s kabaddi team at the previous Asian Games, contributing to India’s strong record in the sport.

• Kabaddi became a medal sport at the Asian Games in 1990 and has remained an important medal discipline for India.

• The Asian Games 2026 opening ceremony was scheduled for Saturday, 19 September 2026, in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

• Tajinderpal Singh Toor’s ceremonial kit was expected to arrive at Nagoya Airport at 3 PM, affecting his availability for the opening ceremony; India has participated in the Asian Games since the first edition in 1951.

AWARDS

India’s Official Oscar Entry – Gondhal 2026

• The Film Federation of India (FFI) selected the Marathi-language film Gondhal as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.

• The selection was announced on 18 September 2026, from a list of 33 films considered for India’s official submission.

• The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held on 14 March 2027.

• Gondhal is a Marathi-language psychological and cultural thriller, written and directed by Santosh Davakhar, and set in rural Maharashtra.

• The film explores themes including ritual traditions, personal ambition and human vulnerability.

• Gondhal won the Silver Peacock for Best Director for Santosh Davakhar at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in 2025.

• The film also received the FIPRESCI Award at the 17th Bengaluru International Film Festival in 2026.

• The Best International Feature Film category recognises feature-length films produced outside the United States with predominantly non-English dialogue; the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences determines the final nominations after the national submission process.

SUMMIT AND CONFERENCE

International Conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” – 2026

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the two-day International Conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” on 19 September 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

• The conference was organised by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and was held on 19–20 September 2026.

• The NGT is a statutory body established under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, for the effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection and conservation of forests and natural resources.

• The conference brought together judges and judicial representatives from 17 countries, along with judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts of India.

• Participants also included District Court Judges, senior government officials, Ministry Secretaries, State Judicial Academies, State Legal Services Authorities and environmental authorities.

• The conference featured four technical sessions focusing on environmental and climate-related issues, including policy-making and implementation gaps in environmental governance.

• Justice Surya Kant, Chief Justice of India, attended the inaugural session, while Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and R. Venkataramani, Attorney General for India, were also present.

• President Droupadi Murmu was scheduled to attend the valedictory session on 20 September 2026, highlighting the conference’s focus on strengthening environmental governance and climate-related judicial cooperation.
