• The decision followed the RBI’s rejection on 11 September 2026 of Tata Sons’ application to surrender its registration as a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC).

• As an upper-layer NBFC, Tata Sons therefore remained subject to the applicable regulatory framework requiring it to list within three years following the RBI’s decision.

India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement 2026

• New Zealand Parliament passed legislation on 16 September 2026 to implement the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by a vote of 93–29.

• The FTA was signed in New Delhi on 27 April 2026, after negotiations began in March 2025 and concluded in December 2025.

• The agreement covers trade in goods and services, border procedures and market-access commitments, and will enter into force after ratification by both countries.

• Under the agreement, tariffs on around 95% of New Zealand’s exports to India will be eliminated or reduced, with more than half becoming duty-free from the date of entry into force.

• Indian goods will receive 100% duty-free access to the New Zealand market once the agreement becomes operational.

• Bilateral trade stood at approximately NZ$3.99 billion in the year ending June 2026, with India ranking as New Zealand’s ninth-largest goods and services export market.

• New Zealand has committed to invest approximately US$20 billion in India over 15 years, while Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Christopher Luxon have set a target of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.

Canada–European Union Proposed Associate Membership – 2026

• European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed on 16 September 2026 that Canada could become the European Union’s first “associate member” during her State of the Union address at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

• Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney attended the address, and Canada–EU summit was scheduled for late October 2026 to discuss bilateral relations.

• The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 27 member states, but its treaties currently contain no formal legal category of “associate membership.”

• Therefore, the proposed status has no settled legal definition, including whether and to what extent an associate member could obtain access to the EU single market.

• Canada and the EU already have a trade framework through the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), although some EU member states have yet to complete its ratification.

• The proposal comes amid Canada’s efforts to diversify its economic relationships beyond the United States, following renewed trade tensions and US tariffs under President Donald Trump.

• Von der Leyen linked the proposal to shared democratic values and cooperation on issues including artificial intelligence, climate change and the war in Ukraine.

• Mark Carney has stated that Canada is not seeking full EU membership; the precise legal and institutional scope of the proposed associate status is expected to be determined through future Canada–EU negotiations.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Elias 2-24 b – Youngest Known Planet

• Elias 2-24 b was confirmed as the youngest known planet, with an estimated age of less than 1 million years, as of 17 September 2026.

• The planet orbits Elias 2-24, a young star located approximately 450 light-years from Earth.

• Elias 2-24 b remains embedded in the dusty gas-and-debris protoplanetary disk from which it formed and is located within a prominent gap in the disk.

• The planet has a mass comparable to Jupiter, placing it among gas giant planets.

• It is still accreting material from the surrounding protoplanetary disk, providing evidence of an active stage of planetary formation.

• The planet was first inferred from a gap in the disk in 2017, but its existence was subsequently confirmed through further observations.

• The confirmation used observations from the W. M. Keck Observatory (Hawaii), ALMA (Chile) and the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (Chile), along with NASA-funded archival data.

• The discovery, led by Andrea Bernardi of Universidad Diego Portales, Chile, is significant because planets younger than 1 million years are extremely rare, offering a valuable opportunity to study the earliest stages of planet formation.
